Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
