Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such treatments need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
